Three CSB alumnae to be honored during Reunion Weekend June 25

Three alumnae from the College of Saint Benedict will receive honors during Reunion Weekend June 24-26.

The awards, which will be presented during the CSB Gala Dinner at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at the Gorecki Center, CSB, are given to women whose daily lives reflect the Benedictine tradition of the college. The awards are presented by the CSB Alumnae Board on behalf of CSB.

Mary Kay Ketter Carle '61 will receive the Distinguished Alumna Award; Debby Beumer Bradley '86 is this year's recipient of the Benedictine Service Award; and Mary Winzenburg Uran '06 will receive the Decade Award.

Mary KayThe Distinguished Alumna award honors an alumna who has distinguished herself for outstanding achievements in her chosen profession and has made a lasting contribution in her field as a role model and leader for all alumnae.

After her first year at CSB, Carle joined the Jesuit Volunteer Corp. and taught indigenous children in Alaska. She later attended St. Cloud State University and obtained her Minnesota license as an independent clinical social worker and marriage and family therapist.

Carle joined a team of educators to develop a pilot program for early childhood/family education (ECFE) in St. Cloud School District 742. The program was disseminated nationally and became the standard for early childhood programs. Carle and her co-workers helped implement the program in school districts nationwide.

In 1974, Carle and her husband, Dan (SJU '61) founded the first privately licensed Rule 29 mental health clinic in St. Cloud. They went on to pioneer clinical methods in family therapy and the use of a two-way mirror when working with parents and children.

Along with running her business with her husband, Carle has dedicated her time to organizations such as Anna Marie's Alliance, the Forum of Executive Women and the League of Women Voters. In 2007, she also became a regional coordinator for the global network Gather the Women.

Debby Beumer Bradley

DebbyThe Benedictine Service Award honors an alumna who has made a significant impact on those around her for her continued commitment and contributions to community service and social justice at a regional, national or international level. The award also honors an alumna who demonstrates a commitment to the Benedictine spirit of giving hospitality, love of others, listening and social stewardship.

Bradley is chaplain and director of foundation and marketing at St. Crispin Living Community in Red Wing, Minnesota, where she has led her team through the development and implementation of a palliative care approach for those with chronic and serious illness. Along with her involvement at St. Crispin Living Community, Bradley worked for 24 years in faith formation and volunteered extensively with CARE (Cancer, Assistance Resource and Encouragement) working with terminally ill children. She also volunteers on the board of Faith in Action group in Red Wing, and she is the host of a local radio show called "Senior Smarts."

In her spare time Bradley wrote a children's book series about Catholic sacraments called "Sophie Wonders." In addition, she volunteers on the board at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Red Wing, where she developed a video-and-discussion-based program for inmates called "Spirit Quest."

Mary Winzenburg Uran

MaryThe Decade Award honors a 2006 alumna who is recognized by her peers as a great role model and leader for younger alumnae because her outstanding career achievements, representing global consciousness and community involvement in her chosen profession.

After graduating from CSB, Uran left Minnesota and worked for the National Association of Attorneys General in Washington, D.C. While there, she helped found the National Attorneys General Training and Research Institute.

After finding a passion in public health while in Washington, Uran returned to Minnesota and got her master's degree in public health nutrition from the University of Minnesota. In 2012, Uran, along with 2004 CSB graduate Kori Fitschen Carlson, started the Girls on the Run program in the Twin Cities. The program inspires young girls to take charge of their lives. Since its opening, the program has grown to serve 1,000 girls at more than 60 sites during spring 2016. When not working as executive director of Girls on the Run, Uran volunteers her time to numerous organizations, and has helped assist other start-up nonprofits. Uran also sits on the Minnesota Public Radio Generation Listen Founding Board.
