Ten SJU graduates to receive Alumni Achievement Awards during Reunion Weekend June 25

Ten Saint John’s University alumni will receive Alumni Achievement Awards during Reunion Weekend June 24-26. The awards, which will be presented as part of each class reunion dinner, are given annually by the SJU Alumni Association Board of Directors and the university to alumni who have been successful in their careers or active in church and community services.

Those who will be recognized include:

Steve Askew

Steve Askew '66 spent 26 years as Anoka County (Minnesota) District Judge, where he dealt with many child protection cases. His exceptional judgement in these cases was documented in an October 2015 Star Tribune newspaper story, in which he provided direction and stability for a minor under court supervision who would eventually graduate from Harvard Law School and became the Hennepin County Assistant Public Defender.

Terry Hartman

Terry Hartman '66 taught history and social studies and coached athletics in Hastings, Minnesota, for dcades, which culminated in his being awarded the Employee of the Year in the 1999-2000 school year. Additionally, he is active in his church and is most proud of his 48-year marriage to his wife, Renee Dinndorf. "This may be surprising to some who do not know what a humble man he is," one classmate said, "but Terry realizes his role as a loving husband takes precedent over more public roles and achievements in his life."

J. Todd Kelly

J. Todd Kelly '66 taught middle school social studies and religion for 26 years and started instructing classes for blind adults on how to use computers in 1992. In 2000, he began teaching other adults with disabilities computer skills at the Courage Center in Golden Valley, Minnesota. Having lost his vision due to an inherited retinal disease, he "believes that when a disabled person is able to work, their self-esteem, satisfaction and happiness skyrockets," one classmate said.

 

John Lawler

John Lawler '71 worked as a finance executive in Washington, D.C., for more than 40 years, where he sold his services to corporations and Christian faith-based non-profits. He became the youngest U.S. House of Representative Chief of the Office of Finance in 1975 at age 25. Lawler founded East West Financial Services, Inc., in 1987 and started and leads two other investment advisory firms. He also helped two parishes in Washington establish impressive endowments.

Frank Dooley

Frank Dooley '76, Ph.D., is a nationally recognized agricultural economist and professor at Purdue University, where he has taught since 1998. He currently serves as vice provost for teaching and learning. As author of four books and hundreds of articles or other publications, he has added much insight to the area of logistical and supply chain management for food and agribusiness. "Food and learning have been made better by Frank Dooley," said one of his nominators.

Evan Applequist

Capt. Evan Applequist '81 rose to be the personal dentist for President George W. Bush in his 30-year career as a Naval Dentist Officer. During his time in the Navy, he also served on the aircraft carrier USS America and as program director for the Comprehensive Dentistry residency at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, Md. He also found time to teach as an adjunct faculty member at George Washington University. He passed away from cancer on Dec. 11, 2015.

Shaun McElhatton

Shaun McElhatton '81 is an attorney who specializes in real estate development issues with a concentration on affordable housing projects. The Harvard Law School graduate was involved in such high-profile projects as Minneapolis' Block E and Graves 601 Hotel. He dedicated countless hours to the Boy Scouts High Adventure program. In 2014, he relinquished his part-ownership in a national law firm in order to serve in Naryn, Kyrgyzstan, with the Peace Corps.

Nakasone

Maj. Gen. Paul Nakasone '86 is Commander of the Cyber National Mission Force and a highly decorated officer who has held command and staff positions at all levels of the Army - Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army Cyber Command, and Director of Intelligence, J2, International Security Assistance Task Force Joint Command in Kabul, Afghanistan. On two occasions, he served as staff officer on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. These assignments have taken him across the globe to South Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan. "He has dedicated his career to educating and leading countless military personnel," a classmate said.

Murray McCartan

Murray McCartan '91 is nearing his 20th year as a special education teacher at Bloomington (Minnesota) Jefferson High School and was a finalist for the 2013 Minnesota Teacher of the Year Award. After one of his children was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis, he took his passion for fitness to two different charity organizations, where he helps raise awareness for neurofibromatosis through running marathons.

Dan Schumacher

Dan Schumacher '96 is CFO and chief operating officer at UnitedHealthCare, the country's largest health insurance company. Due to his finesse in guiding the company through health care reform and in adjusting to rising health care costs, he was awarded CFO of the Year in 2014 by Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. Beyond that, he is a positive presence in his community, inciting one classmate to describe him as an "extremely ethical individual. Dan has the ability and intelligence to create ways to help the bottom line without compromising his principles."
